about

Commandant Roswell, the representative of a secret society of students dating back to the 9th century, the Goliards, commissioned me to create a new version of the song Gaudeamus Igitur, which was the international anthem of the students of European universities in the Middle Ages. The French esotericist Claude Sosthène de Grasset d'Orcet has written a lot about their rituals and the influence they once exerted in the arts and even in politics. According to Commandant Roswell, the Goliard Order could also be considered the ancestor of ‘Pataphysics.

For this project aimed at highlighting the university's initiatory heritage, I requested the participation of the members of Ensemble For Sound Poetry And Contemporary Music. What I had in mind was in a sort of buffoon spirit, of medieval Dadaism.

Both Gordon Way and Wilfried Hanrath have created their one versions, using samples provided by Linn Friberg and Volker Störtebeker. I also have created my own version, from an anonymous music score found on the Musescore collection.
