Our machine of choice; the tabletop model 1930's Columbia Viva-Tonal Grafonola in the photo. To achieve this result, Skit and I spent an afternoon experimenting with different types of microphones (and other recording devices), placed at varying locations, both inside and outside the machine. For each recording attempt, we would wind the spring up, place the tonearm on the space at the end of the record (for the extremely inquisitive, it was "The Lion And Albert", a 'humorous monologue' by Roy Barbour, released in 1934 on the Rex label) and either let it spin till the spring was fully uncoiled, or one of us would turn it off. We ended up with several real-time recordings to draw from, this is an edited composite made from the best of them. And in true musique concrète homage, of course, the tracks runs at 4:33!
